Who would...

... send their kid to a school that only teaches math and english? I do. I only just found this out at our last parent teacher meeting. Austin's  4th grade teacher informed us that because the school has done so poorly on state proficiency tests, they only teach math and language arts. What the hell is that! No history, no geography, no art. They also do P.E. a couple of times a week. Whoopie! I guess until those test scores go up, that's what the cirriculum will be. That bites. I may have the option of sending Austin to another school in the district, one that is doing better on the state tests, but that would invovle a lot of transportation. I just can't believe the school district could just eliminate so many subjects without parents knowing. They only inform you about the school's performance on the tests, but not how they are going to deal with it.

Only about 100,000 people died in the first 4 hours of 24! Jack Bauer was only resposible for 2 of them.

It's called "No Child Left Behind" .... what it really means is "just teach to the tests or we will lose our federal funding".... I'd be leading a riot against the school at this point.

We had a similar experience in the city we lived in.  We chose to transport our elementary-aged child across town to another school with better test scores.  It was a real hassle but we survived it.  He is a pretty smart kiddo, so perhaps he would have been fine without getting the more well-rounded education, but we wanted him to get the best school experience possible.  The worst part for him was not getting to see his neighborhood friends during the school day and having to be the "new kid" at an unfamiliar school.
Sad, that this is an issue at all.

Thats a great way to deal with the problem.  And we wonder why our kids don't know the difference between England and Australia.  I would think that they wouldn't be allowed to do that, but who knows anymore.

Unfortunately, teaching the test is becoming the trend.  What I can't figure out is how a school can get away with that.  I mean, as a homeschooler, we're REQUIRED to teach the four main subjects: Math, English, Science, and History...so how can a SCHOOL get away with only teaching part of those?  Doesn't make sense!  I also think there are a lot of other things that go on in the schools that parents don't know about.  It's wise to stay involved and know exactly what's going on in school!  :o)

Good luck!
